Flight Programs at the FAI F3P Indoor Aerobatics World Championship

5

At the Indoor Aerobatics World Championships, world champions are crowned in two categories. One is classic aerobatics (F3P-A), featuring predetermined maneuver programs. The other is artistic aeromusical (F3P-AFM), featuring individual programs set to music and incorporating additional effects. In both categories, there are four preliminary rounds. The top performers from these preliminary rounds then advance to the final rounds. In the final rounds of classic aerobatics, pilots fly a more complex maneuver program—the F3P-AF—than the one used in the preliminary rounds (F3P-AP). For the F3P-AFM final rounds, the pilots have rehearsed another individual flight program, which they present to the spectators and the judges.

Characterization of F3P-A
  • Classic aerobatics with predetermined figure sequences
  • Very precise, slow, smooth, and harmonious flights
  • Light aircraft with coaxial propulsion (40–50 g flight weight, 18–20-inch propellers)
  • Judges evaluate each maneuver based on precision and positioning within the airspace.

F3P-AFM Characterization
  • Artistic performances featuring custom flight routines
  • Slow and fast passages, synchronized with the music
  • Use of streamers, lighting, and confetti
  • Reverse flight sequences and super-fast rotations
  • Slightly heavier aircraft with 4D and thrust vector control (150–200 g flight weight, symmetrical 8.5-inch propellers)
  • Judges evaluate the entire flight based on precision, complexity, harmony with the music, use of airspace, and special effects.

Description of the maneuvers in the F3P-AP preliminary round program
  1. Standing Triangle with ½ Roll, ¼ Roll, ¼ Roll, and ½ Roll
  2. Humpty Knife Flight with a ¾ roll up and a ¼ roll down
  3. Rolling circle with an integrated ½ roll outward and a full roll inward
  4. Gymnastics combination with a ½ integrated roll and ⅜ rolls upward
  5. Roll combination: ¼ roll, full roll in the opposite direction, ¼ roll
  6. Half roll loop with one full integrated roll
  7. 45° downward knife-edge with a ¼ roll, ½ roll in a 45° passage, ¼ roll
  8. Shark fin with 2 opposite ¼ rolls, two ¼ rolls downward
  9. Loop with a ½ Tork roll in the first quarter
  10. Fighter Turn with two consecutive ⅛ rolls up and down
