Obituary: Edward Ernst
With Edi’s passing, we have lost a member who was deeply committed to model aviation. Whenever a position needed to be filled and Edi saw that he could contribute his expertise, he stepped up. Whether it was at the Bern Model Flying Club, in the Bernese Oberland/Valais region, or within the Swiss Model Flying Association, he shared his knowledge everywhere.
He held various board positions at the Bern Model Aviation Club. For many years, he served as treasurer. During that time, the new clubhouse was built. Together with Fred Kaufmann, he played a decisive role in ensuring that this project was successfully completed. He was also active in the regional association as well as in the Swiss Model Aviation Association. Edi wasn’t much of a speaker. “Get things done” was his motto.
But he wasn’t active only as a board member. Edi was passionate about free flight. He was active in various classes. He had taken a liking to magnet-controlled free flight from an early age. He wasn’t just a competitor at the events. No, he soon went on to represent the BOW region on the Free Flight Technical Commission. As the national team captain, he was always ready to
services. He led the Swiss national teams at various international championships, achieving great success with them.
Edi was a co-organizer of the Swiss Free-Flight Competition in the Gürbetal, hosted by the MV Bern. The event was held several times, most recently in 1991 as the first World Cup competition for the F1A/B/C classes in Switzerland.

Edi wasn’t just seen in free flight. In 1975, the F3A (aerobatics) World Championship was held at Belp Airport. Edi served as the judge there. With his professional expertise, he helped ensure that this championship is remembered very fondly.
With Edi’s passing, we lose a figure who contributed so much to model aviation.
