The Signauers took a chance

After the difficult COVID-19 period—which, unfortunately, is still not over—we finally have a normal air show again. Traditionally, the Signau Model Aircraft Club holds its annual air show on the first weekend of September. Normally, there are

are usually many model flying events, but their number has dropped significantly during this time. Strict regulations, which aren’t enforced uniformly everywhere, often create uncertainty when it comes to planning. The Signau group took the plunge, made inquiries with the relevant authorities, and so the event went ahead

Nothing stood in the way anymore. It felt really good to meet up with my fellow model airplane enthusiasts once again in the most beautiful summer weather. It seemed to me that there were also more spectators again, sitting on the festival benches behind the fence and enjoying their bratwursts. So that brings in some money again for the club’s coffers—the 50-year-old MG, which has 58 members.

What struck me was that, in this or that MG, there was a tentative

Once again, a few juniors took part. Whether it was the Burgdorf team with their Viper formation—truly skillfully synchronized—or the local boys with their glider tow, small but still remarkable. By far the youngest was Maik Stuber’s four-year-old son; of course, he still needed a lot of support from his father—there’s hardly a better flight instructor...

The event featured a truly excellent and entertaining program. Maik and his Hawk were simply amazing—you can’t get any lower than that on knife flights! Michael Tschimer’s wonderful scale helicopter, the Cougar; the Huttwil team, represented by President Sandro Tanner and former President Tom Wulf, really put on a show. Rolf Heutschi from Niederbipp, with his massive Pitts

Bulldog, and Niklaus Huggler’s Corsair—a feast for the eyes. The Riggisberg team with their famous formations. There were about 50 pilots on site; I can’t list them all, but they all certainly deserved to be mentioned. I must also mention Roger Knobel—not as a pilot, as usual, but as a spectator—a prominent figure, indeed…
