Oberkulm Warbird Meet

The IG Warbird was a guest at the “Schoren” model airfield in Oberkulm. Once again this year, the Kulm Model Flying Club was a wonderful host to the approximately 30 pilots and the large crowd of spectators.

When we arrived at 8:30 a.m., things were already in full swing. The most beautiful warbirds were being assembled and prepared for flight. As we greeted people, we spotted a special model here and there. The Warbird guys had been hard at work again over the winter. The weather forecast was good; it was pretty cloudy at first, but it was supposed to clear up. Thunderstorms weren’t expected until late in the evening.

The team from the Kulm Model Flying Club works like a well-oiled machine; the food service ran flawlessly from morning through evening. I also found the prices to be very reasonable. During the lunch break, there were once again numerous interesting conversations; here and there, people even had a good laugh.

A gravel path runs parallel to the runway at the model airfield. The attentive flight marshals immediately alerted the pilots whenever a pedestrian or cyclist approached; twice, horses even trotted along this path. That meant launching the model aircraft into the air so as not to startle the horses. Everyone here knows each other and shows mutual understanding.

Whether Saito, Valach, Mokki, turbine-powered, or even electric—the air was electric at times when the warbirds roared across the runway, and the spectators automatically became listeners as well. Today was once again a model flying event in a class of its own. Thanks to the Kulm Model Flying Club for their hospitality!
