The Beginning of a New Generation of Aerobatics

In September, the “Sportflyers” aerobatics competition took place at the model airfield in Büren, SO. It was encouraging to see that there were a few more pilots competing than last year, for a total of 13. The competition was divided into two categories: Sportflyers Basics with 9 maneuvers and Advanced/F3A with 17 maneuvers.

Three runs were flown, with the worst one not counting toward the final score. “Sportflyers” is for model pilots who want to advance, who are determined, show a certain level of ambition, and can take joy in a good flight. Right on time at 8 a.m., participants were able to register with competition director Felix Andres, who, with his extensive experience in organizing aerobatics competitions, helped create a calm atmosphere. This had a positive effect on the entire day’s schedule. After the second round, there was a lunch break, and that’s when the women and members of the Büren Model Flying Club really showed their best side. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped out, especially Fabia and Ruth… your cakes were amazing. In the third round, all the pilots gave it their all once again—notably in beautiful fall weather. For Marco Grunder, it was his best round, and he won the Sportflyers Basics category ahead of Jonas Ronner, Claude Rouillier, and Benjamin Surber. In the Advanced/F3A category, Martin Lüthi won ahead of Felix Andres.

"Sportflyers," an aerobatics competition for juniors and beginners

The FAI-RC aerobatics classes F3A, F3M, and F3P place very high demands on piloting and technical skills and, in their current form, are not exactly conducive to developing young aerobatics talent. Competitions featuring a junior flight program have therefore become a necessity. In 2018, three Sportflyers events were organized by the model flying clubs in Uster, Breitenbach, and Büren. Thank you very much!

The Sportflyers team has already begun planning for the coming year—in particular, a major Swiss Junior Aerobatics Championship is on the agenda. Of course, senior beginners are also very welcome at the same event. There are always separate rankings: juniors and seniors.
