Vision for a Model-Making Exhibition
The other day I had a dream, a vision: This is exactly what a model-building exhibition could look like!
Hanging in the entrance is a simple wooden glider with a wingspan of about 2 meters (okay, it’s an Amigo). I can already hear a boy say: “Hey, Dad, we could build that one too—it’s probably not that expensive and not that hard to fly.” ... Oops, the first goal of an exhibition has already been achieved. The exhibition itself—oh, there aren’t just highly polished showpieces on display. There are also everyday models, some of them already showing quite a bit of patina. And most of the models come from the organizing group. Everything is organized by category. There I see the tethered gliders, the powered gliders, the sailplanes, and also the crowning glory of model aviation: the free-flight models. And there are staff members on hand everywhere. Neighboring clubs are obviously participating as well—for example, if a club’s own model aviation group doesn’t have any free-flight models. A local model shop is there, too. The owner isn’t necessarily looking to make a lot of sales today, but rather to encourage people to visit his store by sharing his extensive knowledge and expert contacts.
Everything is very well geared toward the next generation—and not just the little ones. Adults are also happy to receive advice to help them get started in the world of model flying.
Of course, a raffle and a restaurant are standard features at an exhibition these days. At the flea market, it’s not just old junk being sold, but genuinely useful items. And here’s the coolest part: the kids don’t have to struggle with some so-called “awesome” simulator—they can build little gliders under supervision! Twice, a flying competition with these gliders takes place on the field next to the building. Who can fly the farthest? There are even small prizes to be won. “Mommy, Mommy, I won a Coke and some French fries!” Sometimes less really is more.
Of course, there are a few large models on display as well, but they don’t really attract much attention. Even seasoned model airplane enthusiasts are drawn to the simpler, older models. I used to fly something like that, too. Do you remember? Fly it once, fix it twice. Those were good times, actually.
There are still events that stand out from the crowd. Cozy, family-friendly, inspiring, and affordable. The kids get creative—a drawing becomes a plan, and with a little Depron, a pair of scissors, and some glue, that plan quickly turns into a plane.
Well, unfortunately, it’s just a vision. Or is it?
