Only minor noticeable deviations
On October 13, 2018, amid perfect weather and sunny conditions with a temperature of 23 degrees, the Swiss RCS Aerobatics Glider Championships took place at the idyllically situated Mühlethurnen model airfield, hosted by MG Bern.
Thirteen pilots accepted the SMV’s invitation and competed in this exciting event. The first participants arrived the day before and were able to take advantage of the beautiful weather for a few practice flights.
Andreas Schärer tops the leaderboard, followed by Roland Jacob and Stefan Gloor. It was an extremely close competition, with only a few points separating the top finishers.
The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, thanks in no small part to the pilots themselves, the fair and competent judges, the flawless organization by MG Bern, and—last but not least—the stunning view of the Stockhorn range. The participants had to complete the “limited” program, which was judged by a five-member panel. This was no easy task, as the discernible differences among the top pilots were once again very small. Five rounds were flown and evaluated. Two runs consisted of seven figures known in advance. In the other two runs, the seven figures were announced just one hour before the start (unknown compulsory figures) and briefly explained during the pilot briefing. The final run—the freestyle—was particularly well-received by the spectators.

They brought home the medals: from left, Roland Jacob, Andreas Schärer, and Stefan Gloor.
There, the pilots put on an exciting show for the crowd with music, smoke, and their own creativity.
The many gliders, with wingspans ranging from 4 to 6 meters, were towed by the Power-Schlepp team, which is well-known throughout Switzerland. The two tow pilots, Bruno Fedrizzi and Christoph Jaberg, excelled with their fantastic and reliable tow planes. They quickly pulled the gliders to a release altitude of 450 m, where the competitors could perform their maneuvers in the sky at an approach altitude of 400 m. The glider pilots found the tow pilots’ vario readings and precise commands extremely helpful.
Catering was organized by MG Bern, prepared on the new grill, and enjoyed by all visitors. We thank all participants for their spirited and ambitious participation in this exciting competition, the organizers at MG Bern, the judges for their fair scoring, and a special thank you goes to the tireless tow pilots.
