The Fascination of Model Building: Friedrichshafen is the mecca of model aircraft building. Exhibitors in Hall A4 saw once again this year that interest in the hobby of model flying remains strong. Model builders of all kinds felt like they were in paradise for a day, and the excitement was palpable in every corner.

This report is limited to model aircraft building, as covering everything would go beyond the scope of this article. Private individuals and club members displayed their model aircraft on display platforms or let them glide down from the hall’s roof. The offerings from manufacturers and retailers ranged from models for beginners and advanced hobbyists to control systems, electronics, and a wide variety of accessories. Advances in technology, materials, and electronics were clearly evident and demonstrated just how dynamically the hobby continues to evolve.

The agile indoor slowflyers provided a show and plenty of action with their lightweight models in the entrance hall. On Friday, the weather was at its best, and at the adjacent airport grounds, everything revolved around model flying. Experienced pilots demonstrated their skills with large-scale models—jets in particular dominated the impressive show and drew enthusiastic spectators.

All in all, it was a superbly organized exhibition. And given the large number of visitors, one thing is clear: interest in model building is greater than ever.
