Friendly Flights
1977 Kyburg Cup Motor Glider Competition
Organizer: MG Illnau-Effretikon
Not exactly spoiled by beautiful summer weather, we looked forward to the approaching month of October with some skepticism. But when we were putting together the event calendar in January 1977, it was impossible to predict how the weather would “behave” throughout the year.
Although it was still quite rainy and cold on the Saturday before the friendly competition was to take place—and it had rained continuously throughout the night—we decided early at 6 a.m. to go ahead with the event. Just two hours later, the weather was at its very best, so we were able to welcome the competitors in high spirits.
Of the 32 participants originally registered, 28 actually showed up. While the first four or five competitors were able to complete their routines under practically ideal weather conditions, the next few suddenly found themselves in serious trouble. Almost from one minute to the next, a very strong “Bise” wind picked up, which even caused our supply stand to “wobble.” Nevertheless, flying continued to the best of everyone’s ability and skill.
After the first round ended, a vote was taken on whether to continue the competition; the majority demonstrated resilience and fighting spirit. Under truly precarious conditions, some models—some of them very beautiful—had to succumb to the force of the wind, and a few competitors had already withdrawn beforehand.
The rest even managed to push through to a third round, some with aircraft that were already heavily damaged.
The closing awards ceremony once again created a cheerful and lively atmosphere.
The lucky winner received not only a beautiful challenge cup—donated by the organizer in the form of a pewter jug—but also a pewter mug. Second and third place were each rewarded with a pewter mug. In addition to salami and entire aircraft fuselages, each participant was able to choose a prize.
The spirit of camaraderie demonstrated that there is considerable interest in this category as well, and we therefore urge all motor glider pilots to participate more actively in this meet.
In any case, we are already looking forward to welcoming you back to our airfield next spring. Until next time. W. Erismann
