50. F3A World Cup: Coupe des Alpes in Pfäffikon

At the end of September, pilots from China, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Switzerland competed for coveted World Cup points in F3A aerobatics under autumnal conditions. In addition to three Chinese pilots, nine-time world champion Christoph Paysant-Le Roux was also among the competitors.

Organizer Emil Giezendanner describes the history of the Coupe des Alpes as follows:

“It all began with Bruno Giezendanner’s two world championship titles.”

After Bruno successfully defended the title he had won in Germany in 1969 in the U.S. in 1971, the F3A community expected that international F3A competitions would also be held in Switzerland. At the time, our main role model for organizing such events with suitable infrastructure was MG Liechtenstein. At that time, the members of MG Pfäffikon were still flying at the Pfäffikon shooting range, where the first international F3A competition was subsequently held. It became increasingly difficult to secure the use of the range for entire weekends. As a result, the event evolved into a wonderful “traveling competition.”

In the years that followed, numerous clubs within the NOS took over the competition with great dedication. MG Reichenburg, in particular, was very active and hosted the event about 20 times. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of them. For the first time this year, a judge and three pilots traveled from China to attend. The Chinese pilots and organizers are looking to gain international experience and are also hosting an F3A World Cup near Shanghai. For most pilots, this marked the end of the F3A season. Unfortunately, due to fall-like conditions with a moderate Bise wind, only two P25 rounds and an F25 final featuring the top six pilots could be flown on Sunday.
