A Look Back at MG Bern’s Open House: A Good Example of Active Youth Development
"Open House Days" are an excellent way to attract new members to the club. Thomas Suter, head of youth development at the SMV, attended such an event hosted by the MG Bern.
On April 7, the MG Bern, led by “Charly” Morgenthaler, held a model aircraft introductory day as part of the “Ferienpass” program. Twelve young people took part in the event, whose exemplary organization serves as a good model for similar activities in other clubs.
The program began at 9:00 a.m. with an introduction to aerodynamics, which made use of the NOS CD-ROM and PowerPoint presentation titled “Schnuppern ist super!” Once all participants had been provided with a common theoretical foundation, the work continued in groups during the following three sessions:
- Flying on the Simulator
- Glider construction
- Flying on a dual-control glider

The SMV’s Simulatorbox was used as the simulator; it has proven itself over many years of use and can be borrowed free of charge from the AeCS Central Secretariat.
The Graupner balsa wood launch glider, used in glider construction, was generously sponsored by Insider Modellbau in Zollikofen. While building the glider, participants became familiar with the construction materials that remain the most important in model aviation, as well as how to use glue and sandpaper.
The highlight for everyone, of course, was flying with dual controls. The fact that the first loops were already being performed by the afternoon is a testament to the efficiency of the training method and the typically very steep learning curve among young people.

A small airshow gave attendees a glimpse of the possibilities available to model aircraft enthusiasts: On the ground and in the air, visitors could admire a representative selection of free-flight models, ranging from electric jets and a scale Ju-52 to large glider tows.
The fact that one of the 12 “vacation pass” participants has already signed up for a trial membership following the event is a testament to its success. Quite apart from that, the event has also contributed locally to the positive image of model flying as a meaningful leisure activity.
Thomas Suter, Head of Youth Development at the SMV, congratulates MG Bern on an exemplary event. His department is always happy to assist interested clubs in organizing similar events.
