Air Show Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the MG Willisau

4

Flying model airplanes through the skies with the Pilatus mountain range in the background and, further to the west, the snow-capped 4,000-meter peaks—that’s the panorama that members of the Willisau Model Flying Club can enjoy at their airfield. As is so often the case, every view eventually becomes routine and “normal.” That is, until September 7–8, 2024, when the club celebrated its 35th anniversary with its air show.

In addition to the flight demonstrations, the many visitors were delighted by this breathtaking view and the Alpine panorama. Like a magnet drawing them to the most beautiful spot in Switzerland, pilots from all over the country had registered in advance. In addition to them, club pilots and model aircraft enthusiasts from Hockenheim also signed up to fly. A total of over 50 pilots attended the mandatory morning briefing, where the flight director went over all the important details.

For this weekend, the model airfield was literally transformed into a festival grounds. The existing safety net was extended in both directions, and festival tents, a barbecue hut, a sound system, and more were set up. Saturday was set aside for open flying. The “mailbox system” was used to take turns. Anyone eager to fly could insert their name tag into a mailbox, and when their turn came up, they took to the air. On Sunday, flying took place according to a predefined program that was highly entertaining for the spectators. Saturday saw a good turnout. The weather couldn’t have been better. The breathtaking flight demonstrations and many unique aircraft thrilled the spectators. Then on Sunday, the calm before the storm… No, it wasn’t quite that bad. After all, the weather gods were also among the many visitors, and since one highlight followed another, flying continued until shortly before the end of the program. But then the rain came, and it poured buckets. Fortunately, the pilots were able to keep a close eye on the approaching rain clouds and bring their models to safety in time. Another successful and accident-free model flying day for the Willisau Model Flying Club went down in the club’s history. Motivated by what can be achieved through combined efforts, and once again reaffirmed by the fantastic model flying field with its breathtaking views and Alpine panorama.
