A Meadow Full of Model-Making Artistry

6

For the 20th time, MG Huttwil is calling on model aircraft builders to make their way to the model-from-plan and home-built aircraft gathering. And they’re coming, as reliably as ever, in droves from Switzerland and abroad. Despite the uncertain weather forecast, nearly all of the 56 registered pilots find their way to “Huttu.”

With many participants having already arrived on Friday evening, the meadow above the popular Grübli fills up on Saturday with model airplanes of all kinds. Every year in Huttwil, you see new projects—some still under construction, others already ready to fly. Franz Schmid from MFC Oberland traveled over 400 km from Germany with a stunning 1:3-scale Dr. Hübner monoplane. Unfortunately, the Roto-130 inline engine isn’t quite cooperating, so the model remains grounded. But even so, this work of art captivates the interested audience.

Rolf Heutschi brings a “4:1 Monster Click,” which—unlike most model builders—he didn’t scale down but instead built four times larger than the original. The Click has a wingspan of 3,200 mm and a length of 3,600 mm; it’s powered by a Leomotion 8085/100, which drives a 36x20 propeller. The power system draws its energy from 2P-12S-8000-mAh batteries, which is necessary given the model’s 20 kg weight. This unique model is constructed from Sage, balsa, CFRP, and iron-on film. When the model stands next to Rolf on the runway, its size is most striking; once airborne at a certain distance, it loses some of that impact. However, this phenomenon is nothing new.

Hugo Christen presents his new Morane D-3801 semi-scale model, of which he built three copies this winter on a 1:5.3 scale based on an enlarged plan from Baumberger-Tech! One of these models already has a new owner; Hugo has been flying a Morane himself since this spring. Wingspan: 3030 mm / Weight: 20.7 kg / Engine: Roto 125 ccm. The third model, still in the shell stage, is waiting for a buyer. The Morane is a real treat for any warbird fan. Nussbaumer. The model is built to a scale of 1:5.3, with a wingspan of 2,400 mm, a length of 1,900 mm, a 140-mm wooden propeller, and a weight of 12.4 kg, 2x12S 5800 mAh 15 Venom DH.112 by Ueli Amacker.

Rolf Fritschi brings his Fieseler Storch, which he built on a 1:3.5 scale. He demonstrates the excellent flight characteristics of this beautiful model, which is equipped with a smooth, powerful electric motor.

On Sunday, the event unfortunately had to be canceled due to strong winds and unsafe weather conditions. As a sort of finale, Beni von Arx put on a beautiful display in the cloudy sky above Huttwil with his ScaleWings Mustang 70%. You can enjoy Beni von Arx’s impressive video by scanning the QR code.

We’d all like to thank MG Huttwil for this flawlessly organized event. For me, MG Huttwil is and always will be a prime example of a model flying club: what the members pull off year after year is truly exemplary. Let’s go ahead and set aside the weekend of June 28 and 29, 2025!
