The Matrix

7

Here is a matrix/schedule for the current winning flight. I'll try to explain how it works: The horizontal lines represent the different phases of the flight. The first three are for the tow flight:

  • STR (straight tow)
  • CIR (Circular Towing)
  • OLA (On-line Acceleration).

At the end of OLA, the line is released from the hand, and then the timer starts. After releasing the line:

  • PU (Pitch-up), to tilt the model nose-up,
  • CR (Cruise), during which the model flies straight up due to the excess speed from the OLA,
  • BNT (Bunt), when the model returns to a horizontal position. At the end of the Bunt, the model’s speed should equal its glide speed. This means that all the potential energy from the excess speed has been converted into altitude.
  • FG (Fast Glide) is a somewhat “safer” glide setting during the first 10 seconds. It serves to stabilize the model before the final, more “extreme” glide setting (GL).
  • The final position, DT (De-thermalizer), is intended to cause the model to descend after the maximum flight time.
  • The first vertical line, T, represents time.
  • The second, STA, is the servo position for the stabilizer.
  • The third, RUD, is the servo position for the rudder.
  • The last two, RF & LF, are the servo positions for the right and left flaps.

The timer also features a built-in GPS for locating the model after the flight and an altimeter. The attached altimeter curve is from the winning flight in France. Lauri
