Be More Adventurous in Your Experiments

It’s not as if model airplane building has completely fallen out of fashion—quite the opposite. Anyone who visits the various venues and gatherings for model builders—such as Huttwil—is in for quite a surprise. Beautiful models, high-scale replicas, as well as original designs and experimental models. However, this shouldn’t blind us to the fact that, for the most part, the models seen at our flying fields are ready-made or semi-finished, which inevitably leads to a certain degree of uniformity. Admittedly, the market offers a large number of beautiful and perfectly crafted models—but unfortunately also junk destined for imminent disposal. The elegant gliders found in our Alps mostly come from Eastern Europe, while wooden and foil-covered motorized models come from Asia, etc. We

Model airplane enthusiasts have thus become ordinary consumers and are spoiled for choice. Competition pilots today are largely dependent on commercially available materials anyway.

The DIY boom has received an additional boost thanks to excellently prepared kits. Building from plans has become easier and more precise thanks to new technologies, leaving almost nothing to be desired. Here, it’s worth joining a work group or enlisting the help of service providers. This should encourage us not only to tackle attractive replicas but also to venture into new territory. Whether we rely on traditional design methods or, so to speak, promote the digitization of model aviation with the growing range of hardware and software is irrelevant. What matters is the courage to experiment, to create innovative designs, and to

solutions that aren’t immediately obvious. I wish you the best of luck and many exciting and educational hours. We learn the most when we’re venturing into uncharted territory.

Best regards
