Maximum speed indoors

On Sunday, March 25, 2012, the IGMA welcomed about 30 pilots from all over Switzerland to its 9th indoor event in the triple gymnasium at the Goldau Vocational Training Center: Locarno was represented, as were Romanshorn, Sörenberg, Bonstetten, and others.

The great atmosphere—with around 500 spectators each time—the generous prize table for the competing pilots, the exciting competitions, and the IGMA’s friendly organization are clearly getting around, so that, in addition to the regular pilots, newcomers are also showing up in Goldau time and again. Among others, Nico Strebel presented his AeroMusical program, Fabian Zahler received the most votes from the audience for his astronaut model, and Thomas Wäckerli achieved the highest speed in the hall at 67 km/h. In between events, people gathered at the Propellerbeizli, and model flying was promoted through many conversations. The Skyman Squadron

At the pilot’s request, a radar system is used to measure the speed of his model. The highest speeds are continuously recorded on a board. The five fastest pilots receive a prize.

Before and during the competition, competition tickets are sold to the audience for CHF 1.00 each. Spectators may purchase multiple tickets. Participating pilots wear a start number and have no more than one minute to demonstrate their most original model. At the end of the demonstration flights, all pilots will present their models to the spectators once more. The audience selects the model they consider the most original by writing the pilot’s number on the ballot and placing it in the ballot box.

The IGMA thrilled both the audience and the press; Tele1 also covered the event that same evening. One of the event’s goals—to maintain and promote the IGMA’s image within the community among residents and local authorities, and thereby also to garner support for outdoor flight operations (exclusively electric) on its runway—was once again achieved. Next year, on March 23 and 24, 2013, a two-day event is planned to mark the 10th anniversary, featuring an exhibition and (hopefully) another Swiss Championship. The IGMA hopes that many pilots and interested parties will mark their calendars for this date now.
