10. OLD FRIENDS FLY TO MARBACH

More than 20 pilots gathered early in the morning under clear skies at the model airfield in Marbach. Shortly after being welcomed with coffee and croissants, the briefing was held. Afterward, all pilots were able to launch their helicopters into the air. The models were powered by gasoline, kerosene, and electricity.

During the short breaks between flights, there were lively discussions and technical exchanges, and construction issues were addressed. I was very pleased that participants traveled from near and far and enjoyed the wonderful camaraderie. Many onlookers were also spotted at the model airfield. It was also noted that most of the pilots were born in the ’50s, ’60s, or ’70s, which gave the “old-timers” at Freunde Fliegen such a special touch. In recent years, an increasing number of young pilots have also been gathering in the Rhine Valley. It was nice to reminisce about one or two anecdotes from days gone by. So there were decades of experience and expertise gathered at the field. This knowledge was gladly shared, which is a wonderful sign in today’s world. In model aviation, there’s still a sense of camaraderie; envy and hatred don’t reign.

The 11th gathering will
take place on March 20,
2027; alternate date:
March 27, 2027.

At noon, Roli Kaufmann prepared his customary fondue, seasoned it, and served it up. As always, the cheese was completely devoured. Our wives also got a taste of it, since he didn’t skimp on the garlic. We also grilled a few things.

We had a wonderful time chatting until late afternoon and headed off happily to enjoy the rest of spring. Thank you to all the participants, the great volunteers, and of course the MFV Marbach for providing the model airfield. ■

Thank you, dear friends, for a great day, Dani Hofmann
