Model-Building Course at the Nidwalden Model Aircraft Club

During the vacation program, students approached us and said they would like to learn more about (and try out) model aircraft.

A construction course seemed like the obvious choice. We reached out to various school districts to ask if we could hold it at their schools. Unfortunately, we received many rejections. No interest, no space, and the students were already too burdened with after-school activities. But we also found people willing to listen and were met with great generosity. The municipality of Oberdorf provided
us with the facilities, including all the tools and machinery. At an information evening, we discussed potential aviation projects and clarified what the financial implications would be.

It quickly became clear—we would build three hand-launched gliders and two RC gliders
. With the generous support of Hope Modellbau, we were able to procure the Lilienthal models. The building course, held over six Saturday mornings, was a complete success. The participants were
supervised by club members and parents. At the end, the gliders were finally able to take to the air for the first time. Some fine-tuning was still carried out.

Slope flying is still planned for spring 2019. The next building course will also be offered in the spring. ■
