SMV Honored by “Pro Aero”

5

At the 2009 AeCS Delegates' Assembly in Olten, the Swiss Model Aircraft Association was honored by the “Pro Aero” Foundation for its work in promoting youth and the next generation of pilots.

The “Pro Aero” Foundation emerged in 1938 from the Aero-Club, which—faced with a wide range of urgent tasks even at that time and limited resources—called for a nationwide fundraising campaign. In its founding year alone, over 600,000 francs in donations were received! This initial fundraising campaign was followed by countless others at the Foundation’s initiative, including the issuance of commemorative stamps and the organization of special postal flights. The Foundation’s goal and purpose was, and remains, the promotion of Swiss aviation.

The “Pro Aero” Foundation directs the majority of its annual contributions toward promoting aviation and nurturing the next generation of pilots to the Aero-Club of Switzerland. The disciplines of model aircraft, gliding, powered flight, hot-air ballooning, and skydiving benefit particularly from this support.

In the area of youth development, the foundation provides substantial annual funding for the AeCS youth camp, known as “JULA.” In addition, it regularly makes contributions to the Swiss Model Aircraft Association and its affiliated organizations, as well as to regional model aircraft associations. Recent examples include spontaneous financial support for the “Performance Badges” and “Model Building and School” initiatives presented at the SPK in Baden in 2008, as well as the production of the DVD “Scenes from Model Aviation.” And much more.

In 1985, the Foundation Board decided to establish and award a recognition prize for outstanding achievements in aviation. Each year, this prize honors an individual, group, or institution from the civil or military aviation sectors for exceptional contributions, particularly in the promotion of youth and the next generation. →

The fact that this year’s Recognition Award went to the SMV is a wonderful acknowledgment of the activities of the SMV Executive Board and the initiatives launched by the Youth Development Department, which were continued with great dedication in 2009 as well. At the same time, the award—and this is where the clubs and each individual come into play!—calls on us to make use of the programs recognized by the award. The award, consisting of a substantial gold medal and a certificate, was accepted by the SMV President
