After a two-year hiatus (due to the pandemic), international competitions took place again for the first time last year. Alain competed in the junior division at the “FAI F5J European Championships for Electric Powered Duration Gliders” (European Electric Thermal Gliding Championships), held August 21–27, 2022, in Szeged, Hungary. Alain finished in 14th place. Following the 2019 World Championships in Slovakia, this was the second major international competition in which Alain represented Switzerland as the youngest member of the national team. As the delegation marched onto the airfield, he led the way as the flag bearer. Alain will also compete in international events this year. The Swiss Championships (Swiss Junior Champion 2020, 2021, 2022) will take place this summer, and the highlight will be the World Championships in Bulgaria in August, for which he has qualified. ■

On the occasion of the 9th Delegates’ Assembly of the Swiss Model Aviation Association on Saturday, March 18, in Gossau, 17-year-old Alain Schad from Mÿhlau, a member of the Affoltern a. Albis Model Flying Club, was honored with the “Arnold Degen Challenge Trophy.” This challenge trophy is awarded annually to the youngest participant in the World or European Championships.
