28th International MBZ Circuit Flight Competition
Class A Aerobatics (F2B) at the Hard 2000 Model Airplane Field, Untersiggenthal
This year’s field of pilots once again clearly demonstrated that the MB Cup is a long-standing tradition and that participants are not deterred from taking part in this competition—even by high gas prices. The organizing club, MBZ Basel, welcomed a total of 29 pilots from 9 countries—including one participant from New Zealand.
Despite fairly good weather conditions, the pilots had to contend with gusty winds on Saturday; Sunday, however, brought calmer but cloudy skies. Several competition pilots, having just returned from the World Championships, demonstrated their high
caliber and proved that tethered aerobatics is now flown at the highest level. Many participants are long-time competition pilots and “seasoned” in handling all the procedures surrounding the event, which of course contributed significantly to a smooth operation—

contributes to the organization. In terms of propulsion, the field of pilots is currently divided into those who use traditional engines with mufflers and those who rely on 4-stroke and resonance engines. Everything works, and over the years, everyone has come to favor—or at least grow accustomed to—a particular type of engine. Unfortunately, electric-powered gliders have not yet gained the popularity we’d like to see, though the main reason is likely the difficulty in sourcing suitable components. Well, glider pilots are innovative people, after all, and there’s still potential here. The colorful models, built with great enthusiasm, are always a sight to behold—they’re crafted with meticulous attention to detail and the hope of flying these Expo-nate models for many years to come. The finish is often so perfectly crafted that it resembles a work of art. Unfortunately, only two participants are flying in the beginner program, thereby signaling that, sadly,

The field of participants.
There is a shortage of suitable young talent here as well. The festival food stand—which is consistently praised—and its hardworking volunteers once again managed this year to treat those in attendance to many delicious delicacies
food and drink. Not to mention the evening spaghetti get-together, which is always a hit and helps strengthen many good friendships long into the night in the festival tent.
At the awards ceremony on Sunday, the organizer looked back with great satisfaction on two fantastic days and heaped high praise on everyone.
Of course, our club didn’t miss the opportunity to award, in addition to the usual medals, the extra “Body-talk” prize—which is popular with everyone—to the pilot who delivered the best performance. This time, it went to Yves Fernandez from France, who was visibly moved during the presentation. In addition, each participant was able to take home a small “Bhaltis.”
We hope this event can be held again in two years, though this isn’t always easy given the aging membership of our club. Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me and the club in any way. The experiences we’ve had invigorate and inspire our thoughts.
