Organization: MG Zurich

On Saturday, September 16, 1989, a beautiful, sunny late-summer day, we held the 1989 Interregional F3A Championship at our airfield, located between Eglisau and Buchberg. Between 8 and 9 a.m., the pilots, their assistants, and the judges arrived at the airfield. In the meantime, our trusty Heinz Polster and his two assistants had already prepared coffee and croissants, so everyone could enjoy a meal from the field kitchen. Between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m., Walter Wuhrmann, as competition director for the Zurich Model Flying Club, welcomed 17 pilots with their assistants, Region 5 Chairman Emil Giezendanner, four judges, and various competition volunteers to the briefing. The participants who had traveled the farthest came from Ticino. Afterward, the first round could begin. Bernhard Schaden scored a zero in this round because his engine failed him. This round was completed before the lunch break. Then our head chef, Franz Frick, arrived with a hot lunch that was truly fantastic, and there was plenty for everyone who wanted some.

Around 1:00 p.m., the second round began. During this round and the third, Bernhard Schaden managed to take the lead despite his zero score in the first round. René Suter had the misfortune of having his model’s exhaust manifold break during the final round, forcing him to abort the flight. The final standings can be found in the results list.

Now I’d like to mention another important effort that greatly contributed to the smooth running of this championship. I’m referring to our scoring office. It was set up on the bed of a delivery van, covered with a canopy to protect against sun and rain, and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The equipment consisted of a state-of-the-art PC running software developed in-house by the accounting office manager, Roman Ledergerber, which left nothing to be desired and allowed the corresponding rankings for each participant to be printed immediately after data entry via the built-in laser printer. This allowed pilots to see where they stood immediately after each run. The setup also included an ultra-quiet generator as well as the necessary tables, chairs, and so on. In addition, Fridolin Jeker, Daniel Ruegg, and René Schnorf were on hand to assist the scoring office.

After Walti Wuhrmann announced the results, our regional chairman, Emil Giezendanner, thanked all the pilots and volunteers for making the event such a success and wished everyone a safe trip home, whether they were traveling near or far.

In closing, I’d like to note that it was a wonderful day; the organization, under the guidance of our competition director, went off without a hitch, and we at the MGZ were delighted to have these pilots as guests at our airfield.

Above all, I’d like to thank Myrta and Doris for their help in the field kitchen, as well as everyone who contributed in any way to making this day a success—even if they weren’t mentioned by name here.

Rickli Fritz, President of the MGZ
