Too big to fail

Dear Reader

“Too big to fail”—a catchphrase that has been on our minds recently due to the “collapse” of Credit Suisse. In my view, the phrase “too big to fail” also applies to model aviation. At larger model aviation events, we’ve been observing for several years now how models are becoming larger, heavier, and more complex. On the one hand, it’s fascinating to marvel at a 150-kg model; on the other hand, nothing bad must ever happen—the consequences for our hobby would be devastating, and it would affect us all. That’s why the SMV’s safety reports

are a valuable series that not only highlight the dangers but also provide us with valuable safety tips for the model airfield. We just have to follow them.

Thinking Outside the Box

The cover story in this issue of MFS shows us that things can be a bit more low-key—but no less fascinating. In 2018 at the F4 Scale World Championship in Meiringen, Jan Doubrava from the Czech Republic caught my eye. He had traveled there with two model airplanes and competed in the

categories: F4C and F4H. On Facebook, I followed Jan as he built a new model for the 2022 Scale World Championship in Norway. In November, I asked him if he would provide me with photos and a build guide for an article.

We can now see the result of that request in this issue of MFS.
