Werner Baumann Has Died
A large number of family members, friends, and acquaintances—including many model airplane enthusiasts—paid their final respects to Werner Baumann in Dietikon on November 7, 1974. Death took Werner after a long period of suffering, though it came as a surprise to all those who had visited him recently and witnessed his optimism. His life was centered around three main areas—his family, his beloved profession as a woodcarver, and model aircraft flying.
What model aviator didn’t know Werner? To all of us, he was more than just a fellow model aviator—he was almost like a father to us. Not only the Dietikon Model Aviation Club—which he founded and of which he was honorary president—but also Region 5, on whose board he served for more than ten years, and the entire Swiss model aviation community owe him a debt of gratitude. How many young pilots learned the basics of model aviation from him? To how many fellow modelers, young and old alike, did Werner offer friendly advice drawn from his wealth of experience at championships and competitions? How many times did I get to call him to ask for his help in some capacity at events! Nothing was ever too much for him when it came to his beloved sport. Without asking for financial compensation, he always stepped up whenever help was needed.
A book could undoubtedly be written about the idealist Werner Baumann, his successes at home and abroad, and his tireless dedication to our sport.
At this point, however, I would like to limit myself to expressing my deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and assuring them that we will all honor Werner’s memory.
For the model airplane enthusiasts of
Region 5 of the Ae.C.S.
