Why wooden airplanes, anyway?

Wood holds a very special fascination for me. I’ve already built and flown quite a few wooden airplanes. And they’re all vintage gliders—from the “Grüne Post,” “Tern,” “Grünau Baby,” and “Nemere” to the “Slingsby” and many more—in scales ranging from 1:5 to 1:2.5. In addition, there are

There are still many vintage models with wingspans up to 3.5 m, covered in paper or silk. The events I’d like to attend are also listed in my annual schedule—sometimes as far as 500 km away. Through these gatherings, I take home many new

ideas. The latest project is called the “Nietoperz SZD 6,” a Polish glider prototype from 1951. Today it’s on display at the museum in Krakow. Since I have great colleagues who CNC-mill the parts for my glider, construction is progressing relatively quickly—thanks to Frank and Sepp. Why wooden gliders, anyway? I love the calm and slow flying and the fact that they stand out from the monotonous white of the sky. Enough talk—pictures say more.
