Wiriehorn 2009 with MG Reinach, second attempt

So, it finally worked out: In beautiful weather, a few pilots from MG Reinach met up on the Wiriehorn. Some wives and children were there and enjoyed watching their fathers and husbands try to find a little thermal.

The weather was lovely—though, as is typical for September, there was a light breeze and few thermals. So it took a bit of finesse to stay aloft. Cool—that’s what makes it really fun. Just don’t overdo it, or you’ll quickly find yourself joining the hiking club. This time, it happened to the author. “I’ll get you back up, just one more round”—well, the walk back down to the valley was inevitable. No big deal—the damage to the model is repairable. And next time, I’ll know the terrain’s pitfalls much better.

Oh no, it’s not the display-less transmitter’s fault. I used it, had no software to adjust the servos, and needed mechanical tools. It worked—everything was fine—but the software between the pilot’s ears obviously needs an update!

So, now seriously: Of course, I’ll be using a programmable transmitter again so I can control the flaps and other such features. But in weak thermals and light winds, just a few small adjustments to the controls are really all it takes. The fewer, the better. Back to basics: The plane is flying, and I’m guiding it in what I think is the best direction with the slightest adjustments. If I can center the thermal, I’ll gain altitude—then I made the right call. If not, it’s time to practice, practice, or just go for a hike.

We’re not just flying—we want to enjoy each other’s company, savor the culinary specialties, and enjoy a sip of wine. We were treated to culinary delights both at the Mani family’s place on the Schwarzenberg and at Urs (Ürsu)’s Berghaus Nüegg. A glance is all it takes, and Therese serves up a wonderful Vieille Prune.

The fact that we ended up at a yodeling festival, a wedding, and a class reunion was somehow symptomatic of the openness and hospitality of the people of the Diemtigtal. O gods of the wind, the sun, and thus the thermals: We’ll be back!
