Visitor Impressions from the 2018 Hahnenmoos Alpine Model Aircraft Camp

On one of those hot days in the summer of 2018, I was looking to cool off in the mountains and set out for the Hahnenmoos Pass, which lies at 1,956 meters above sea level. Even the drive through Adelboden to Geils and the cable car ride up to the pass were impressive and beautiful.

Once I reached the top, I was surprised to see so many young people busy flying model airplanes. As I was told, this was the 26th model airplane camp for young people, supervised by a team of eight leaders and held every year during school vacation at the Hahnenmoos Pass.

There was enthusiastic debating, flying, laughing, tinkering, and talking shop. I was impressed by the dedication of the leadership team, who put in this effort every year without compensation.

Not only were the young people able to improve their technical skills, but they also got to be active and enjoy the fresh air. After all, every now and then a model airplane that had crashed had to be retrieved from far down in the valley. →

I was told that the food at the Berghotel Hahnenmoospass was also excellent and very filling, and the breakfast buffet in particular was highly appreciated and praised by both the participants and the leadership team. The highlight of my trip—and likely for all participants of the 2018 model aircraft camp as well—was the lunar eclipse, which took place on a beautiful, clear, and mild night. It’s wonderful that young people can be inspired by a camp like this and were able to expand their knowledge with visible pride.
