SUMMER-LIKE HEAT AND AUTUMN-LIKE FRESHNESS

Last year, gummimotor.ch visited the Gheid airfield in Olten twice. It’s been doing so for ten years now. Hot, windy, thirsty, sweaty—but simply wonderful! That’s how the summer gathering in July went. A strong Bise wind, high fog, gray skies, crisp autumn air, sunny from noon on, and dry all day—those were the highlights of the fall meetup.

At both meetings, in addition to free flying, a FAC competition was held. This year, the models were based on the 1930s U.S. radio series “Jimmie Allen.” Why a FAC competition? Two years ago, gummimotor.ch was accepted by the Flying Aces Club as the 44th Squadron under the name “The Swiss Rubber Twisters.” One of the requirements is to hold an annual competition. In 2024, the competition will feature “Phantom Flash” models.

Twenty teammates, including two juniors, participated over the summer. Seven of them took part in the competition, including an all-female team supported by their husbands or fathers. For the fall

The models used in the competitions: 3 "Jimmie Allen Special" models, 1 "Jimmie Allen Thunderbolt" model, and 1 "Jimmie Allen BA Parasol" model.

The results were as follows: sixteen participants, including one junior. Four competitors. There was something special about the fall meet: three generations among the active participants—grandfather, father, and grandson. This shows that model flying is a hobby for the whole family! At both events, northeasterly and easterly winds ensured plenty of action, sending the models flying quite a distance and making it necessary—or simply desirable—to retrieve them. As always, the range of models was very diverse.

The participants thoroughly enjoyed the events and are already looking forward to a repeat in 2026. SG Olten has confirmed its participation. We would like to take this opportunity to once again extend our heartfelt thanks to the host. We greatly appreciate their hospitality! ■
