Model Sailplanes (F1A and SK) in Dübendorf
Organization: MG Dübendorf

On Sunday, Oct. 3, 1976, the Swiss Championship for high-launch model sailplanes and special designs (flying wings) was held. For once, the weather did not cooperate. Heavy rain fell until the fourth round. Of the 80 registered competitors, only 66 showed up at the start. It was particularly frustrating for the organizer, MG Dübendorf, that some of those who stayed home were timekeepers, meaning that two launch sites had to be canceled.
Nearly half of the participants used the circle-tow method, which offers significant advantages, especially in weak thermals. If no thermals are detectable, the model can be towed back to the ground without damage before the 5-minute time limit expires. The FAI rules were applied. 7 launches. I’d like to give a special shout-out to Paul Schmitter of Thun, the winner of the SK-winden category; as the oldest participant, he competed in both categories. In contrast, there were young guys who couldn’t even get their models off the ground. Stamina is still the top priority in free flight. Boots may keep your feet dry, but sneakers are better suited for racing. It’s also a common observation that individual participants put in less effort after a failed first launch, even though only 1/7 of the total flight time has been completed. I’d like to mention once again that the top 20 finishers are eligible to participate in the World Championship qualifiers.
Despite the poor weather conditions, Dieter Siebenmann and Fritz Gänsli managed to fly the maximum of 1,260 seconds. In the subsequent fly-off, Fritz prevailed at his home airfield. With 156'', he won the competition ahead of Dieter with 136''.
Thanks to the organizer, MG Dübendorf, who have a wealth of experience in hosting such competitions. Thanks to the women of the model flying club at the beverage and bratwurst stand.

Free flight involves setting up, adjusting, trimming, and observing. These are all quite demanding and nuanced activities. Fritz Gänsli (pictured).
