F1E and SK at Altmatt

6

This year’s championship can rightly be described by the motto: “That was sports.” Altmatt is located between Biberbrugg and Rothenturm; the plain consists of a raised bog, which at that time was covered by up to 60 cm of snow.

With wind speeds as low as 2.5 m/sec, the top-ranked models flew up to 2 km. The time limit was set at 1 hour. We barely managed to get the model back in time for the next launch. Covering 25 km on foot through the snow in boots can certainly be called a sport. It’s about time that we free-flight enthusiasts were admitted to the Swiss Association for Physical Exercise (subsidies). The MG Affoltern had the largest contingent of participants.

The Bernese can be held up as a model for the best-organized group. Peter Maurer opted not to take off and used his skis to retrieve all the BE models to a collection point. This group made use of two-way radios.

This competition also served as a qualifier for the national team, which competed in the European Championships in Arosa on July 13–15. Looking at the rankings from recent years, a rise in the number of participants can be observed. We hope this boom continues. One thing must be said, however: Let’s not become “senior-only”! It is every senior’s duty to nurture the next generation.

The MG Winterthur handled the organization in an exemplary manner.
