Regional F3B Competition (High-Launch) 1982

We’re right in the middle of the construction season again, and anyone who wants to be among the frontrunners next year will have already started preparing.

I don’t want to write here about what needs to be built now, but rather to provide an interim report on what has happened over the course of 1981 and how things might proceed.

Since no model flying club had come forward to organize the regional competition for 1981, the competition director organization launched by the Mörsburgers stepped in. On March 6, 1981, the initial ideas were compiled, followed by a competition director training course in Seuzach on April 25. Thanks to the spontaneous willingness of all course participants, the Regional Competition was carried out with excellent cooperation. The opportunity to use a suitable site at the Dübendorf airfield was also by no means a given. Therefore, many thanks once again to the airfield administration and the Dübendorf group for their support.

We had set October 23, 1981, as the next date to discuss the experiences gained and the next steps. I had sent invitations to all group chairmen and competition directors in the region for that evening. A dozen people—almost all of them competition directors, along with regional chair E. Giezendanner—met to discuss the plan moving forward for 1982. It is clear that disciplines A and C must be flown next year. This marks a slight departure from the laid-back competition we’ve had in the past; speed flying adds excitement to the event, though it may deter some pilots from risking their models in such a competition. Today, very high demands are placed on both the model and the pilot to compete at top speeds of around 10–12 seconds.

The time commitment for the regional competition with categories A and C will be quite substantial. It takes 1 1/2 days to complete 3 rounds with approximately 50 participants. In the event that no model flying club organizes this competition in 1982 and the competition directors in our region have to take on the joint effort again, very clear guidelines have been established.

  • Very early announcement (around January 20, 1982)
  • Registration deadline: February 21, 1982

In the event that more than 50 participants register, the region must be divided into two subregions. Competition organizers will handle the division.

  • Each group participating in the competition must provide a specific number of volunteers.
    1–2 pilots: 1 volunteer
    ; 3–5 pilots: 2 volunteers
    ; 5–10 pilots: 3 volunteers
  • Helpers will receive instruction on Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. on the competition grounds. Only trained helpers will be accepted. Otherwise, a pilot will be assigned as a helper.
  • The competition begins on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The date will be specified in the competition announcement.

At least 3 flights will be conducted, with no discarded results.

In closing, I would like to once again extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who so selflessly volunteered their time in 1981 for the work they did. I hope that a group can be found for next year that is willing to take on this kind of work. The idea is that any group that takes on this task but lacks enough people for the organization can contact the competition director’s office.
