In Search of the Next Generation in French-speaking Switzerland ...

7

GAM Yverdon is proud to celebrate its 86th anniversary this year, with a club that is running smoothly thanks to its friendly gatherings, its internal competition, and its Marive swap meet. This is a source of great satisfaction for all its members and their predecessors. But it also represents a responsibility for its Board to ensure that the adventure continues.

Capturing teens' interest... more than just a challenge

The author of these lines often thinks back to his first encounter with model aircraft and the reaction he had when he opened the box containing his first glider. Of course, it was a Kleine UHU, a Christmas gift from his godmother when he was 10 years old. The picture of the model on the box was so beautiful! But what a hassle… Yet he got hooked on it, mustering all the patience he didn’t actually have at that age.

In 2024, with our teenagers accustomed to instant gratification and quick-to-consume TikTok videos, the “Kleine UHU for Christmas” trick just doesn’t work anymore. Luckily, foam models have made that first experience much less daunting. Today, those who’ve heard about our group show up at the field with Dad and a plug-and-play model. But is that enough to ensure the next generation takes over? Not sure…

An event aimed at the general public

Our airfields, which are generally located far from other urban activities, are not very visible and do a poor job of showcasing our activities. To connect with the public and spark interest in our wonderful hobby, GAM Yverdon is organizing an international airshow at the Yverdon airfield, which will be closed for the event. The goal is to attract the general public and families. To make a big splash, the club has pulled out all the stops by inviting Swiss and international pilots flying exceptional aircraft.

Our 2024 International Air Show will take place on the weekend of August 17 and 18. The first flights begin at 9:00 a.m., with night flights on Saturday evening, followed by dinner and a DJ in the clubhouse. Feel free to come and enjoy yourself—admission is free!
