F3B High-Launch Event in Emmen

On June 16, amid glorious summer weather, the regional championship for the F3B high-launch category was held in Emmen. While high above our heads, our friends from the gliding club seemed to glide effortlessly along their course, we model pilots struggled with the challenges of the high-launch program.

Where there are updrafts, there must also be downdrafts nearby; thus, despite a flawless takeoff, many competitors found the ground closing in menacingly on them as soon as they completed their turn.

A certain stagnation was evident in model design, and only the young Probst from Lucerne flew a model equipped with air brakes. Fredi Schenk used his new, self-built 70-cm system. This frequency band undoubtedly offers interesting possibilities, especially for glider pilots.

Hanspeter Senn deservedly won the championship; his third flight, in particular, was impressive with its precise maneuvers and elegant flight pattern. The runners-up, Toni Zehnder and Ruedi Baumgartner, also executed beautiful flights. Finally, a special thank you to MG Lucerne, whose highly efficient organization of the field ensured that the competition ran smoothly. Rolf Girsberger
