The Lightness of Flying

Dear Reader

As is customary in issues of Modellflugsport, the cover image always hints at the cover story. It’s easy to see that this time it’s about indoor model airplanes.

What’s more, with the FAI F3P/AFM World Championships coming up in early February 2025, we have a major highlight ahead of us. The effort required for such an event is enormous, and the organizing committee is putting its heart and soul into it; so it’s a matter of honor for us model aviation enthusiasts to attend this world championship as spectators, experience the fascination of this discipline, and thus support the event.

The Great Disappearance and the Creeping Change

If we flip through an issue of MFS from late 2013, we can easily see that a major change has taken place. You can do this quite easily in the Modellflugsport.ch archive. I count no fewer than 16 well-known Swiss model shops from back then that no longer exist—and it’s been just over 10 years since we could still buy supplies for our hobby there. We still have model shops in our country—and we should take good care of them. Most of the time, when we shop at such a store, we’re buying from an acquaintance or a friend and getting advice—so they’re welcome to earn a little something. But what if we lose our specialty retailers because of “stinginess”? Everyone can imagine the consequences for themselves: We’d be sawing off the branch we’re sitting on.

Perhaps we can use the time leading up to Christmas to send a message in this regard?

The editorial team hopes you enjoy reading this issue and have a great time as spectators at the Indoor World Championships at the Burkertsmatt Sports Arena in Widen.
